Director: Hayao Miyazaki. Cast (voices) Billy Crudup, Billy Bob Thornton, Minnie Driver, Claire Danes, Jada Pinkett Smith, Gillian Anderson. 134 min. Rated PG-13. Japan. Animation.
To just call this a "cartoon", is a cruel understatement. Miyazaki always impresses with his lush beautiful imagery, and that would have sufficed to make this a memorable piece of art, but here he goes above and beyond by telling the epic story of a young boy who's infected by a forest demon, and launches a crusade to cure himself, and bring peace and harmony to battling beasts and humans. Rarely do I remember being so engrossed in such a long animated fantasy tale. The movie tagline calls it: "The Star Wars of animated features!". I can imagine why.
PS: Thank you, Ali, for the thrilling recommendation.

I will make a point to see this soon. I love Japanese animation. Have you seen the classic Akira? Or the family friendly My Neighbor Totoro? If not, give them a go.
ReplyDeleteToast, you can see a few days ago, I posted my review on "My Neighbor Totoro" also. At the time I gave it a Soso, but my 2-year old has been hooked on it! Now that I watch it (for the nth time), I think maybe I should've given it a Mojo.
ReplyDeleteAfter seeing your Facebook post, I started watching "Akira" a few weeks ago, but wasn't too attracted and stop watching after 15 minutes. But if you say it's that important, maybe I should try it out again.
Akira was the movie that made anime huge in the UK and started the craze that lasts to this day. I love the soundtrack and the crazy mixed up story. It has some truly mind blowing sequences. I suppose it would be done "live action" now with stunning CGI but I think I would still prefer the animated version as it just looks fantastic.
ReplyDeleteI'll go for it.
