Director: Cary Fukunaga. Cast: Edgar Flores, Paulina Gaitan. 96 min. Rated R. Mexico. Drama.
Boy, am I happy I don't live in Honduras. In the same lines of "City of God", apparently in some countries, survival without being part of a ruthless street gang is impossible - and your chances aren't much better even when you are part of them. The story of immigrating to the paradise called America, literally on top of a train, with all its friendships and betrayals, gives the concept of "road movie" a broader meaning. Another example of how cinema exposes an otherwise intangible world, "Sin Nombre" is a very different experience, but not for the weak of heart.

I liked the movie , it was very strong.
ReplyDeletethe last shot, was somehow I identical to "what just happened" when they killed Sean penn.
ReplyDeleteBut the killings here were much more brutal than Sean Penn's, not because they were more violent, but because they were real ...
ReplyDeleteOne of the most beautiful movie I've ever seen. I'm at loss for words after seeing of this beauty of art .JUST A MUST SEE!
ReplyDeleteSplendid. I'm happy the recommendation was on target.
ReplyDeletespoiler Alert!
ReplyDeletethe film was somehow full of reality of violence, how emigration cause people lose their lives, how a country suffers from anarchy which reminded me of " I witness" and "border town" and how savage incucations can affect a child's mind so that you may never be able to help it changed.
honestly! how comes...a train makes two worlds totaly different
sorry I meant " inculcation" which L is missed!!!
ReplyDeleteInteresting allegory: how a train connects two worlds.
ReplyDeleteThe last time I remember seeing a similar use for a train was on "Dr. Zhivago". In that film, every important life event happened while the main characters were getting on, sitting in, or getting off a train/trolley/ ...
Wow after 2 years i see some interesting note here...I love Dr. Zhivago and its sound track...the concept of train for connecting people is amazing! on the contrary it is thought mostly it put distance between lovers.... remarkable in war movies.ya?
ReplyDeleteAnyway i came to say :
I know you are not fan of romance genre...I guess you don't like this sort of movies especially but the second work of this filmmaker(Cary Fukunaga) is a beautiful versian of Sharlot Bronte famous novel : Jane Aire ..such delicate work of classic romance is realy rare these days .
Maybe good to know:D
I have another problem with the new "Jane Eyre": I don't like Mia Wasikowska! I think she's an actress who's becoming famous for no talent whatsoever.
ReplyDeleteBut one day, I might check out "Jane Eyre", just because the book wasn't too bad ...
How nice if you had read the novel already. I read somewhere , it’s considered as one of the first feminist novel which focus on women and their independency in 19th . Since I guess you are aware enough there are many adaptations of “Jane Eyre “ in Cinema that you can check them out one day!. In my experience of watching 4 of them , you should go first to the remarkable classic of 1943 by performance of Orson Welles, ……This is said that most attractive Mr. Rochester of all versions is Orson Welles. I think he is but to me the rest are o.k. : like William Hurt, Toby Stephen and now is Michael Fassbender….and also about Jane, all of them are the same however Charlotte Gainsbourg in 1996 was close to my imagination of Jane from novel...(Mia Wasikowska is cold and rigid , but Joan Fontaine is more sweet and nicer than expected) It’s amazing than in spite of having many similarities in plot, scenes, quotes but there are predominant differences between versions especially about final scene and some part of plot and details.I think this is basically due to the power of novel which would provide such great field for any artist and filmmaker through the time to be inspired and tell the story again. Such British stories never get old ( like Wuthering hights, Oliver Twist, Rebeca, Dracula , and whatever....agree?)Anyway If you”d rather go on details ,you should watch mini-series which seems 2 of them is considerable ,I saw one of them and through 4 hours most details of book well paid attention enough .
ReplyDeleteEnjoy!
Dear Maryam,
ReplyDeleteThank you for all the info on the different versions of "Jane Eyre". So if you were to recommend between the Orson Wells version and the 2011 version, which would you prioritize?
I agree with what you said about some powerful novels. I have the same feeling about Victor Hugo's "Les Miserables" and Bram Stokers's "Dracula".
Really hard question! I got stock on answering! On the one hand you asking me about a very classic and first adaptation with great performance of Orsen Welles and putting aside of such classic is a sin undoubtedly , on the other hand the new version own the elements of a modern adaptation but with some manipulation in plot which seems mandatory for this modernism somehow. Then If you wanna pick up just one , Maybe go at first to the 2011 and then take a look at to classic for Welle’s performance it worth watching maybe as a second choice I guess?
ReplyDeleteHow could i forget Les Miserables?! since new version is in the way !
Sounds good. I've rented the 2011 version today. Will write my comments soon.
