Green Lantern (2011)

Director: Martin Campbell. Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, Tim Robbins, Angela Bassett. 114 min. Rated PG-13. Action/Fantasy.

Among all superhero movies this year, this was the weakest. Too many aliens and too little character development demolish any chance of creating sympathy for the perils the protagonists are going through. In the face of an all-star cast, the only mildly attractive character was played by Mark Strong as Sinestro (but he's another alien), and the film's message of "choosing will over fear" may amount to something. Sad what Martin Campbell (Edge of Darkness, GoldenEye, The Mask of Zorro, Casino Royale) has come to.

  1. I finally got round to watching this and have to agree with you, it was dire. I wasn't even convinced by the CGI. Special effects have come so far that unless they are perfect they look weak. Too many aliens? I didn't think so. Too much love interest? Yes!

  2. Maybe it's just me, but I have a problem relating to movies where so many alien characters have roles, there's not much left for human characters. I believe that's one of the reasons (among others) that "The Phantom Menace" of the Star Wars episodes fell flat on the face.

  3. Phantom Menace was really just a very long advert to sell merchandise, I hated it.
I often prefer aliens to humans and was disappointed that Aliens vs Predator had humans in it at all. I do like humans though...sometimes ;D

  4. Interesting thought: imagine if "Alien vs. Predator" was entirely in alien language, without subtitles. It would be like a silent film to us, same as what they pulled off on "The Artist". Now that would have been an intriguing movie to watch.

  5. I agree, but the money men would never go for it. I think there was a movie set in prehistoric times that just consisted of grunts, was it Quest for Fire? I never saw the movie for some reason but I don't think it was a money maker.

  6. I looked up "Quest for Fire" on imdb.com. Looks interesting, with an acclaimed director (Jean Jacques Anaud). Maybe I should give it a try.
