Snow White and the Huntsman (2012)

Director: Rupert Sanders. Cast: Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, Ian McShane, Bob Hoskins, Ray Winstone, Nick Frost, Toby Jones. 127 min. Rated PG-13. Fantasy/Action.

Love it when I'm given dark adult-themed versions of childhood fairy tales (Robin Hood, The Dark Knight), to show what really happened - and I wasn't told because I was too young to understand. So eat your heart out Walt Disney; the cat's out of the bag. This creative Lord of the Rings version of Snow White is more to be seen than heard, as the gloomy visuals are hypnotic, Theron and Stewart are perfect in their roles, and the seven dwarfs are a stellar cast. Expecting cinematography, costume and make-up Oscar nominations. Disappointed by the 48% on the Tomatometer.

  1. I did not find this quite dark enough for my tastes. I only really started to enjoy it once the dwarfs made their appearance and felt they were under used.

For a truly dark vision of Snow White check out the Rammstein video for their wonderful song "Sonne". They even manage to weave in some humour and a little tenderness.

  2. Maybe it's just me, but I found the humor greater than the darkness! I actually liked their take on it.

There's another version of Snow White from the 90s, starring Sigourney Weaver and Sam Neill, which I haven't seen yet. The poster looks quite dark. Have you seen it? I should give it a try soon.

  3. I haven't seen the Sigourney Weaver one either, I expect she would make an excellent evil Queen, surely she isn't playing Snow White!

  4. Exactly I got surprized by score 6.3 in IMDB too .If I hadn't read your recommendation, never go to see it ! it's not fair..... good moveie ,good acting & good behind the scene gossip!

Your analysis of our chilhood phantasy and compare to dark-theme realistic adulthood's story was very interesting.I can't agree anymore !

  5. Maryam,

Did you notice how much better Charlize Theron gets with every villain she plays?

There was another more "lighter" Snow White movie this year, "Mirror Mirror", with Julia Roberts as the evil queen. That didn't get good reviews either, but I'm curious to see how it turned out.

  6. Ya I noticed . she was really brilliant in such tough gray roles . she mentined in media she's interested to be in gray role( black roles is better word!)Anyway I like her performance ,hero and anti hero . Her role in Young adult was fantastic too. I read your review which shows you like that role as well.
Julia Roberts as a villain??. Sounds interesting !. I don't rememeber any simmilar role for her but positive?

  7. "Young Adult" was probably the best Theron has done in years, since her "Monster" Oscar win.

And the villainous Julia Roberts in "Mirror Mirror" can only make me guess ... the movie is a comedy! Of course, IMDB says it is.
