The Girl Who Played with Fire (Flickan som lekte med elden) (2009)

Director: Daniel Alfredson. Cast: Noomi Rapace, Michael Nyqvist. 129 min. Rated R. Sweden/Denmark/Germany. Thriller.

Great story, great story, great story - and none else. The second episode in the Swedish "Man Hate Woman" trilogy written by the late Stieg Larrson follows the intriguing chronicles of the young computer-hacker Lisbeth, and the joy of watching her brutalizing her aggressors couldn't be more entertaining. Obviously not as original as the first episode, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, but still can't wait to see the third (already produced in Sweden) - especially since this one was "To Be Continued".

PS: It would be fun to watch all three episodes of a trilogy - in the same year!

  1. I've had all three movies for some time now. I haven't watched any of them yet. Do you recommend watching them back to back? And how was the 2nd movie with subtitles?

  2. Oooooh ... I wish I could see the third movie! I think I can wait to see it on a wide screen.

But I believe watching all three back-to-back would be a superb idea. It would make a very fun weekend marathon.

  3. Well, I watched all three movies over the weekend and I can tell you that the first one was the best (and like you said the most original). But overall I'm impressed. I'm waiting to see how the remake with David Fincher as the director will compare.

  4. They cast the actress for Lisbeth's role yesterday. It's some no-name actress - which was the right thing to do (Natalie Portman or Scarlett Johansson would have been huge mistakes, as was initially planned). And I guess you already know Daniel Craig is to play Michael Nyqvist.

  5. I want to know what they will do with the story other than casting different actors which is in essence like dubbing the movie.

    ****Spoilers ahead****

And I agree that casting a known actress wouldn't be wise. Besides, do you think they would go with the rape scene (which was hardest for me to watch but essential to the story)?

    ****End of Spoiler****

And yes I knew about Daniel Craig and I think he's a good choice and kinda looks like Michael Nyqvist from the original.

  6. The rape scene in the first one is another very good reason they should not use a known actress.

And if they leave out the rape scene from the remake ... then there's no point in watching the remake. Lisbeth's feeling of vengeance is all based on that event. If that doesn't happen, how would the audience understand her rage?
